Change is in the air in Grand Island when it comes to housing. There's a push for landlords to have smoke free properties. One organization says it can save money and your health.

"I find people who have allergies are not able to live in a house that has been smoked in," said Landlord Bob Frazier.

Bob Frazier has been in the rental business for Seven years, and for him having smoke free properties has been a good policy.

"I think the first two obvious reasons are for health and safety," said Frazier.

The other concerns, the cost to maintain and refurbish a home thats been smoked in.
Which statistics show could cost him nearly Seven times more, compared to a home that hasn't been smoked in.

"The cleanup costs can be up to 55-hundred dollars maybe even more depending on what damage is caused by the smoking," said Sandy Yager with Tobacco Free Hall County.

Yager has been holding workshops to educate people in the rental business why they should have a smoke free policy.

"It doesn't just affect the individuals who smoke it affects everybody around them," said Yager.

She knows that first hand, suffering side effects from second and third hand smoke, which would make renting a property that's been smoked in impossible.

Its another reason why she encourages landlords to implement a smoke free policy.

"It's completely legal and even hud recommends the housing authorities have smoke free policies," said Yager.
