Searching for smoke-free housing just became easier in Lincoln County with the release of the "Breathe Easier, Smoke Free Housing list.

Even after a smoker extinguishes their cigarette, the scent they leave can still be noticed. Tobacco Free Lincoln County is doing their part to let people know where they can find housing free of smoke.

"We've been working with a number of apartment managers and developed a list of those that offer smoke free housing,” says George Haws, Cord., Community Connections Tobacco Free Lincoln Co.

The list includes apartment complexes, realtors and retirement communities, all of which have been designated as smoke free in an effort to offer a healthier environment for their residents.

"We have a number of facilities on the list and expect that it will be growing and we'll be adding to it as time goes on,” says Haws.

Second hand smoke is a concern for young children with an increase in the number of deaths rising both nationally and worldwide from those who don't even smoke.

"A lot of times the air inside our homes can be much worse than the air outside and tobacco smoke is one of the reasons for that. We're especially concerned about young children and the health effects on them,” says Haws.

Along with second hand smoke, a less commonly known threat related to smoking is third hand smoke.

"When it settles in the carpeting, the furniture and the drapes, then is what we call third hand smoke,” says Haws.

Haws says Tobacco Free Lincoln County will be asking the public to join in the effort to make Lincoln County smoke free.

"We'll be encouraging people to designate their homes and their cars as smoke free areas. This list, which we've titled, Breathe Easier, Smoke Free Housing in Lincoln County is available on our website and it's also available in a hard copy at the chamber of commerce office,” says Haws.
