Kathy Burson was a presenter at the 2006 Annual Spring Conference of the Metro Omaha Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society and the Greater Omaha Oncology Social Workers. Her presentation centered on how to be an effective advocate around clean indoor air issues. Susie Dugan presented to 14 community and school groups this reporting period. Earlier this year, a presentation was given to youth at the offutt Youth Center on Kick Butts Day. The youth participated in the learning process and later created message murials to be displayed at the Center. Other group presentations have also been given at local high schools, specifically Bellevue East High which invited TFS to teach during a full day PE Tobacco unit. The coalition has a representative from a school in Schuyler helping us work with the schools. The coalition has also gained approval to use the schools internal video system to run short videos regarding second hand smoke and tobacco use. Mt. Sinai's T.A.T.U. Youth Group held the "Stomp Out Tobacco QuizBowl". The event took place on Saturday, November 23rd at North High School. The event was covered by The World Herald as well as KPTM Channel 42 (FOX Channel 10 on Cox Cable). The event consisted of eight, four-man teams made up of church and community youth groups. The teens competed for price money answering questions from ten tobacco related categories. The categories were Secondhand Smoke, Legislation, Operation Storefront/Accessibility, Smoking in Advertising, Finances, Tobacco Products/Ingredients, Local Tobacco Free Organizations, Health Issues/Dental/Nutrition, Minority Smoking Statistics & Youth Statistics. The student teams were given information to study over a six week period. The materials covering these categories came from publications from the PRIDE Office, articles researched from the internet and five tobacco fact brochures from Journeyworks Publishing. We held study session with the students. They also met many times on their own led by their team, adult advisors. The competition had the format of the TV gameshow "Family Feud" where two teams compete against each other answering tobacco related questions. The top three teams received prize money & gold, silver or bronze medallions. Copies of the World Herald article and the TV News covering the event are available upon request. T.A.T.U. stands for Teens Aggressively Taking "U"thority. The concept of "Uthority" is "It begins with You". We are teaching our young people to change the community by first changing themselves through education and taking on positive lifestyle practices and then influence those around them. February 2003, the Product Placement Committee conducted Operation Storefront in Omaha City Limits to assess compliance to new Omaha Product Placement Ordinance #36062. 19 adults and 49 youth participated in the Operation Storefront and surveyed 104. Operation Storefront Project successfully surveyed 104 retailers throughout the city of Omaha and found 19 (18.3%) noncompliant to ordinance. A letter and copy of ordinance to retailer not in compliance to the Omaha Product Placement Ordinance. May 2003, the Product Placement Committee and youth went and visited 29 and found 3 (9.6%) not in compliance to Omaha City Ordinance #36062. March 15, 2003, held press conference to release Operation Storefront findings. Councilman Garry Gernandt attended the press conference. February 2003, the Product Placement Committee conducted Operation Storefront in Omaha to assess compliance to new tobacco/nicotine product placement ordinance # 36062. The committee recruited 19 adults and 49 youth to participate and surveyed 104 stores. Operation Storefront found that 18.3% (19 stores) were non compliant with ordinance. Product Placement brochure was sent to all retailers in Omaha who were not in compliance with the ordinance along with a copy of the ordinance. Product Placement committee survey an additional 29 stores and found 9.6% (3 stores) in noncompliance to ordinance. CAC and UNMC rechecked and visited to educate retailers with youth through the Smoke Out Smoking project held on April 5, 2003. CAC worked with N.E.T.W.O.R.K., Mt.Sinai, and UNMC to provide a letter-writing campaign to support the product placement efforts in Ralston. UNMC-CP Antonia received in Nov/03 the letters written by the Latino youth during the summer event. She couldn't connect with the newspaper by phone, and mailed the letters (to a wrong address)without having enough information about the publishing procedures. Due to illness,she couldn't comply with the guidelines to set up the letters publication before 12/31/03. N.E.T.W.O.R.K. coordinated the summer event in collaboration with Creighton Medical Centers' Youth Health Extravaganza held in August. Youth from EDAT and TATU participated by organizing give away bags filled with tobacco information, tshirts, and other promotional items. They also distributed information and promotional items (ballons, infant bibs, stickers, etc.) during the event. MOTAC members from CAC, Mt. Sinai, and UNMC participated in the event. Mt. Sinai / UNMC facilitated the letter writing component. Younger youth unable to participate in the letter writing created a banner by tracing their hand print as a pledge to be "Tobacco Free". Knowledge surveys were conducted, display boards were exhibited, and information was disseminated. Approximately 50 support cards were collected and 20 survey's completed. On May 14, 2007 PRIDE-Omaha presented to 7 members of the Bennington City Council on the benefits of a tobacco product placement ordinance and provided each member with an educational/protocol packet. Megan Franklin received the contact information for the Waterloo Village Clerk in late March from Mayor Caffey in Valley. Correspondence between the Village Clerk and Megan Franklin began on March 22 with a request to be placed on the agenda at their next meeting, which was approved. Megan Franklin also sent a copy of the ordinances passed in Plattsmouth, Bellevue, Valley and a plain sample to the Village Clerk for the Board's review prior to the meeting. Sherry Toelle was very supportive of the tobacco product placement ordiance and agreed to meet with Kathy Burson and Megan Franklin in order to go over the educational packet and discuss her testimony which was read before the Valley City Council on March 13, 2007. Mrs. Toelle also agreed to have the DC West PTSA sign a resolution in support of the ordiance that was brought before the Valley City Council. After the Valley City Council passed the tobacco product placement ordiance Mrs. Toelle encouraged PRIDE to take action to pass a similar ordinance in her home community of Waterloo.
